Amanda Santos

My practice explores bodily kinesthetics as a way to calm my own mental health concerns, such as anxiety and depression. Society forces individuals who suffer from these mental health issues to feel isolated and small. To contrast this, it is important that my work is large and proud. The sculptures I create are a result of my own soothing techniques. It is through repetitive, gestural movements where I can find peace, and address concerns of connectedness. The result is large scale  mixed media abstract sculptures primarily using ceramics, paper pulp, and glass. These process-heavy materials keep my hands busy and my mind focused while showcasing the conversations and relationships these physical media can have with one another. My work celebrates vibrant colors in order to create a rich, dynamic visual experience. A wide array of colors and materials injects joy into the making process, something that I have deemed vital post covid. I am led by intuition, and curiosity as I create.
